Multitasking

“Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” 1 Corinthians 15:58

That term may be relatively new but humans have been doing it since before the world was created and Adam and Eve were in that magnificent garden.

Google tells us that multitasking is: the performance of more than one task at the same time. I am living proof. Sunday, I got a call from a friend and while on the phone with her, I played Mahjong and watched one of my favorite TV shows in its entirety. (Do I remember what she said, maybe not the first time, but after about the fifth time, I could recall word for word.)

But this is not really the kind of multitasking of which I am speaking; although we have become quite talented at it. I want us to look at this concept spiritually. I truly believe that Jesus wants to be our closest Friend and Lord all at the same time. He is our best example of this skill.

As sojourners in the world, we must survive here and yet share the good News of Jesus Christ with a heavenly focus. Now that is some serious multitasking. He created humans with the capacity to know Him as Companion and Sovereign Ruler simultaneously and when He sees the pinnacle of His creation being used improperly, it must grieve Him. He spent time thinking about you before you ever existed. Indeed, you were fearfully and wonderfully made.

But today, we are going in one hundred different directions all at the same time, trying to please everyone. Saying no is almost impossible. Exhaustion creeps up on us and finally we explode in anger. Slowing down works for a while and then the cycle continues. Yes, we are multitasking…but not with Him in mind.

Think about it: only human beings have the ability to receive Him and respond to His Presence. Listen as He speaks to you. He communicates with His Holy Spirit, His Word and with all creation. Put a song in your heart as you live in this world and live for Jesus.

Living For Jesus

Father, help me to grasp the real concept of multitasking as I walk this life path that You have selected for me. I do not want to grieve Your heart so please teach me how to stay closer to You and follow Your example. AMEN.
