Who’s Prayer?

Matthew 6:9-13 Our Father in heaven …

Your relationship with God is intensely personal, although it leaks to others by the story of the life you lead, scene by scene. And the most common declaration of that relationship is couched in the words given to us by Jesus which we call The Lord’s Prayer. However, it could more truthfully be called Our Prayer, since it is written as our communal expression to God.

You may say, “It’s also my personal prayer.” If so, how might it sound? What words would you use to describe the sentiments declared in the prayer? How would your prayer reflect your story?

Here is one person’s prayer which seems to be honest, clear and vulnerable. It isn’t written in stone since the words should change as the person grows in faith and commitment.

My Lord’s Prayer

My heavenly Dad,

I respect and revere your holy name.

I accept your rule in my life, so help me to help you
let your kingdom live here on earth
and let your will be done here on earth
as it does in heaven.

Give me each day all I need
to live a life pleasing to you.

Forgive me my sins, known and unknown, as I repent and
as I forgive those who sin against me
and disengage from any hold they have on me.

Guide me through any trials of temptation
and protect me from evil thoughts and deeds.

You have the power to do it all.

I give you the glory for the good in my life.

Reign in me forever and ever.
Cost what it may, this is my prayer.

Amen

In dark days or light, our spiritual life and physical life should be woven into the same cloth—with the same direction, intensity and fervor. Knowing that our God is not a God of half measures, He gave us the ultimate gift of love to rescue us from destruction. Our response of gratitude and love is proper, but also not in half measures. As C S Lewis wrote: Christ says, “Give me all. I don’t want so much of your time, your money or work. I want you. In return I will give you a new self.”

If the cost seems too much, too difficult, put yourself in the hands of the potter.
