The Persistent Bluebird
“But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves” (John 17:13).
Every day I have this visitor who sits on my windowsill and taps at the window. Every single time it comes, I tell it the same thing, “No, you cannot come in!” It bobbles up and down the window, tap, tap, tapping like it didn’t hear me but I know differently. Sometimes we have a stare down but I think he is more curious about what is inside this room than who or what I am.
At first, I thought he was the most nervous little bird I had ever seen but after weeks of watching him, I have come to the conclusion that he is not filled with anxiety. He is persistent! He does not give up.
Often times when I look out the other window, I watch this little guy in a battle with the side mirror on my car. He pecks at it repeatedly and then hops up and sits on top, only to return and go after that other little bird again.
With piqued interest, I did a little Google study and found them to be extremely territorial. I also learned: “The bluebird is a symbol of hope, love, and renewal and is also a part of many Native American legends. The Bluebird is actually a bird that symbolizes the essence of life and beauty. Dreaming of bluebirds often represents happiness, joy, fulfillment, hope, prosperity, and good luck.”
I can scowl and abruptly, turn to the window and glare, but the tiny drumbeat continues. The little enthusiastic creature does not quit interrupting my work just because I am busy. I am forced to turn my attention to this noisemaker. It will not and cannot be ignored. I stop what I am doing and watch and talk to it.
For many years now I have struggled with this concept of joy. I have a good handle on happiness but my search for joy continues. I can catch glimpses of it but often do not recognize it or cannot figure out what to do with it.
After observing this little bluebird, I have a new goal. My desire is to be as persistent as this feathered friend. I want to experience more joy in my life and be able to share it with others. I promise I won’t be tapping at your window, but I may offer a bigger smile or a stronger hug.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the life-lessons You put before us. Help us to find You in the smaller things as well as the huge ones. Please give us the enthusiasm to be persistent. AMEN.
