Help, I’ve Fallen…

“Your arm is endowed with power; your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.” (Psalm 89:13, NIV)

Recently I wrote a devotion about the importance of laughing. Well, now I am going to share a personal story and you can all laugh with me or at me; either is okay.

I had some surgery on my foot last week (7/16) and stayed with my daughter / family for three days. She was amazing with all her preparations and TLC. She had borrowed a queen-sized inflatable mattress from neighbors and when I got home Friday afternoon, my room was ready. I had to sleep with my foot propped up; awkward but doable. Throughout the afternoon and evening, she had to inflate the mattress several times and made several comments.

Do you know where I am going with this story?

Well, about 2:30am I woke up engulphed in this rubbery cocoon and was trying to put coherent thoughts together due to the pain medication. I came to the realization that I was in the middle of a deflated air mattress. I then got the giggles. ‘How do I get out?’ After trying to roll several times, I got up enough speed to get off the thing. By this time, I am laughing out loud but quickly realize (as I am now on my knees), I have no way to pull my way up to a stand.

Remember that old commercial, “Help, I’ve fallen and I can’t get up?” That was causing me to snort laugh by now! Thank goodness for pain pills because I was not hurting. I honestly don’t know how I got up to a standing position from where I was kneeling.

In my mind, I can picture Jesus stretching out His hand and pulling me up. I can also see Him shaking His head and chuckling a bit. Anyway, I moved to the loveseat and finished the night. I rested better knowing that no matter how silly the circumstances, Jesus cares, watches over me and He is always there.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your healing touch and for taking care of me. Please give me the ability to laugh and rejoice in You.  AMEN.
