“For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.”  Jeremiah 29:11

Jeremiah was writing to the Israelites during one of the darkest and most discouraging times in their history – the Babylonian Captivity.  He was writing to a people that were probably disheartened and scared; sharing profound words of hope and comfort with them from their God. Notice that Jeremiah didn’t say, “maybe” or “possibly” or “perhaps I know the plans?” He said, “surely.” “For SURELY I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord.” I’m sure that the exiles were grateful to have this comforting reminder of God’s sovereignty and control in their lives.

And like the faithful of Jeremiah’s time, we can take our own comfort and solace from this verse. No matter how dark life is, how alone we feel, what trials and difficulties we are facing, or how far from God we feel, He’s got it covered. He’s got it in control. He SURELY knows the plans He has for each one of us and those plans are not for eternal suffering and hardship, but for good and a future filled with true hope – the hope that comes with knowing that one day, even the most lonely exile here on earth will end and we will celebrate our eternal life with God in heaven.
