Human Alpaca
“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” (1 Peter 4:8, NIV)
Alpacas are so very cute but don’t frighten, irritate or make them anxious. If you do, you’ll most likely receive a slimy spit wad aimed directly at your face. Sometimes they just spit because they feel like it; they do not really need a good reason.
We are the human version of that critter. When someone is feeling a loss, frightened, irritated or anxious they tend to spit out hurtful remarks. To the recipient, those words can feel rather slimy and smelly but we are encouraged to love the spitter. Our minds can only imagine the emotions that they are experiencing.
Have no doubts; you will be the recipient and the spitter during your lifetime. Remember that old adage: We always hurt the ones we love. Why? Well, the answer is rather obvious; we know they will forgive us because they love us. But what about the co-worker or friend who blurts out embarrassing or damning words? What happens then?
Personally, I tend to avoid these people after a period of time and label them as needy. I know it is wrong but I am not a big fan of drama. Growing impatient with their snapping, biting and spitting, I step back further and further. We are called to feed, care for and love everyone—I guess that includes the human alpacas. Could it be that they just need some TLC; even if it means getting spit on sometimes.
We still need to care for the person who is going through a challenging season of life. Usually, people will not hurt others unless they are hurting. Loving someone in difficult times means we might get spit on once in a while. Jesus experienced that kind of treatment! He was beaten, berated, spit upon and crucified by the very people who needed Him the most.
In light of Christ’s example, what’s a little spit among friends?
Father, thank You for Your nature lessons. Help us never to shy away from loving others but please forgive us when we do. AMEN.
