The Rhythm of Autumn

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23

I enjoy watching the leaves dance. The only time I see it as a breathtaking display is in the fall. Each participant is decked out in dazzling colors, there is a crispness in the air and usually the leaves are jostled by gusts of chilling wind. Nature comes to life for me as I watch what transpires in total amazement.

They begin their whirling and twirling without hesitation. The gust invites them in and they are carried to new heights of great joy. Around and around they go—not a clue where they will end their journey for the day. Will they be alone or with others who have danced all day as well?

Perhaps my thoughts are unique, but I do believe that we would not experience nearly as much stress and anxiety if we could catch the rhythm of these leaves. Of course, there is no audible tune, just the circles and natural choreographed dips and lifts.

Now as intelligent beings, we can imagine music and even sing songs in our minds. Those that come from the heart are worthy of some mental movement and even some physical effort. Why is it so difficult for us to let go and let the Holy Spirit dance with us? What an enjoyable adventure that would be.

Getting over my control issues would be the first step. If I danced for joy (with no music playing) would they cart me away in a little tight, white jacket? How would life be different if we could give in to God’s will and not worry about what others thought or said? I wonder where the Holy Spirit would lead us. Rest assured it would be the best and most unforgettable adventure of our lives.

His steadfast love encircles us and moves us with a different rhythm than the rest of the world. As we praise Him, He lifts us higher and higher, and we are caught up with a new rhythmic song. His faithfulness is everlasting. And the beat goes on!

Wouldn’t be awesome if it were that easy! Somehow, I think it is…but I have not yet figured it out. Until that day, I will keep practicing as I try to catch the rhythm of autumn.

 Great Is Thy Faithfulness

Almighty God, thank You for all the life lessons of nature. Help me to lose my earthly inhibitions. I yearn to dance freely with the Holy Spirit. AMEN.
