More Than a Moment of Joy

I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. John 15:11 (NIV)

The most joy I have felt during my years is always in December. I am sure that I am not alone when I honestly share that sentiment with you all. There is just something special about Christmas in the north that can’t ever be captured in the south. Yes, there is chilly weather, sometimes snow, light shows and other spectacular community events that I did not experience during the 15 years I lived in Florida.

But wait just a minute, that is not what this season is all about. That is what we have turned it into—a bunch of feelings, tinsel, glitter and gifts.

Let’s think about these “moments of joy” that we all have. During the holidays, family comes together and there are the trips down memory lane. (I am often amazed about all the details we forget and argue about!) There is often laughter and more hugging than usual. We might find an empty seat at the table but there also might be new faces or even a highchair. The older we become, the more we realize how fragile life really is. While surrounded by family and friends, there are those overwhelming snatches of joy as we realize the value of loving and being loved.

We are all loved by our heavenly Father! There are flashes that sprint through my mind when the enemy tells be I am unlovable, all alone and unworthy because of my past. That is when I dive into the Word and find promises that wrap me snuggly in His security blanket. Again, I feel momentary joy!

I’ve come to a point where I want more than a moment of joy. I want to feel it all the time. I don’t even know if it is possible but that’s my heart’s desire. I am not talking about the kind of affirmation we get from reading a ‘how to’ book, or from a life coach. In the midst of the worst-case scenario if we can feel peace, we can feel joy.

Our thoughts must turn heavenward during this Advent season and stay there. When the season ends, our joy continues because it is not a date on the calendar. It’s an eternal thing!

I’ve Got the Joy of Christmas

Loving Father, You are the Giver and Sustainer of life. Please help us find the joyous meaning of Christmas and carry it throughout the rest of our days. AMEN.
