Olympic Gold

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7

“Ah, the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat!” The training for these young people is grueling, painful and difficult as they are pushed to the limits of physical endurance. Their social life has long since faded and they are committed to 2-4-hour work outs almost daily for 4-8 years before they even get a chance to compete for the gold.

All watch in awe and wonder as worldwide contestants demonstrate their skills and talents while hoping to hear their national anthem when the event is finished. There is always that sense of American pride when the red-white-and blue clad Olympians climb up on the medal boxes. Why do they put themselves through the ordeal? What is the satisfaction obtained other than to say they were the best in the world in 2022? Yes, there are cash awards given for medals but personally, I don’t think that can possibly be the driving force. Perhaps it is just personal satisfaction.

But what about those who leave the slopes, fields or rinks with heavy hearts? A loss can be devastating for someone who has given up everything for that moment only to know that there is someone better. Do they pack up and go home or watch to see what they can learn for next time?

There are all kinds of competitions and races during our lives. Could you receive a gold medal for your faith walk? Well, how about silver or at least bronze? Hey, think about it! We have an entire lifetime to train and excel. The best manual is at our fingertips and the best coaches and trainers are available anytime. We all need a good mentor!

Practice for the daily race! Reading about love, forgiveness and mercy is not enough. We have to put it into practice every single day. From the time we were old enough to know right from wrong, we entered a life-long race. There have been some who have tried to pull us off course but our loving Encourager has been there to cheer for us. (When in doubt, referring to the Manual is most helpful.)

If you are still breathing, it is not too late. Get up and get back in the race. He’s waiting for you at the finish line.

Finish Strong

Father God, thank You for encouraging me every day. Sometimes I get tired and I want to give up but Your Spirit nudges me and says, “Not today!” Energize me to finish this race with You. AMEN.
