Long, Long Ago

I remember the days of old; I meditate on all that you have done; I ponder the work of your hands. Psalm 143:5 (ESV)

Oh, if the walls of that old covered bridge could share stories from long, long ago! What would it possible say? Perhaps it would tell of being built, floods, star-struck lovers secretly meeting, heavy logging loads that were pulled through for new homes to be crafted just beyond, or horse drawn hearses when the fever hit the little village.

Today it is simply something to look at. The road on this side goes nowhere except to a turnaround area. It has been renovated and is well taken care of but it serves no purpose.

Are we like that old covered bridge? Once upon a time, in our younger years, we were so active in the church. We taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, served on committees, attended all kinds of functions and loved doing it. Years passed.

The bridge is still standing after all this time of harsh winters, ice floods and high winds. Can we say the same about ourselves? Most of us have been through some serious seasons of tragedy and loss but we have also experienced great joy and celebration. Are we still standing? Do we look renovated?

We do not need to go under the knife for a tuck here or there. We do not need a fresh coat of red paint. We do not need new steel girders to hold us up. Instead, we need to remember who we are, where we have been and where we are headed.

There are no worn-out has-beens. If you are feeling a bit run down, unsteady on your old feet, sleepy or wondering where you might fit in these days, I have a suggestion! Pray with determination! I know a lot of rejuvenated, Spirit-filled people who are not giving up and want to serve God until He calls them home. It starts with a changed mindset.

You do have a purpose and it is more than being artistically beautiful like that old covered bridge. Share what you have in your heart. That does not take a great deal of effort, but it does take courage. Be kind to someone who does not deserve it. Again, it requires you to think differently and allow your mouth to form positive words.

I do not want to be a restored old bridge that goes nowhere. I want to help people cross that icy stream as they journey on to their heavenly home. Do you want to help?

Remember

Gracious God, thank You for giving each of us a purpose. Help us to use it for Your glory and gift it back to You. AMEN.
