You Know Me!
You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Psalm 139:1-3 (NIV)
Walking down the street, we see someone coming from the opposite direction. They sort of look familiar and as we move closer, we frantically flip through our mental rolodex to place them somewhere in the right setting of our past. They move past giving that curious expression: Do I know you? Or what are you staring at? I think we have all had moments like this.
I am so grateful that God does not forget me! Although, sometimes I wish His memory was not as sharp, His eyes as keen and His hearing quite so acute. There are moments when I would like to hide out in a cave as did some of our forefathers. But God always found them, didn’t He?
He knows our thoughts before we have them. Now that can be scary! When the car beside us cuts us off…when our child is relentlessly nagging about getting a cell phone…when the dog is still counter surfing after two years…when we owe the IRS more than last year’s refund…when the spare in the trunk is worthless…when we laughed at an inappropriate joke; well, you get the idea. He knew it was coming!
God is never blindsided but we certainly are. He is familiar with all our ways. The truth is He knows every intricate detail about us (warts and all) and He still loves us! Now seriously, it takes a great deal of love to pull that off. But He is Love!
It is my heart’s desire not to embarrass Him or myself with impure thoughts or ungodly actions. However, I often tend to fall back on this excuse called “being human” and I use it frequently to dig myself out of precarious situations. He already knows what I have done and thought, so why do I try to hide it? Seeking forgiveness would be a much better idea than trying to sweep it all under the rug. No one likes a lumpy rug; it’s not good for posture or balance.
We all need to be a clearer reflection of Him. He knows us inside and out. He even knows each of our names!
Gracious Father, thank You for Your everlasting love. Even when we can’t wrap our brains around that kind of love, You continue to bless us. Please help us to be a reflection of You. AMEN.
