A Difference of One - by Anonymous
If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food and one of you says to them, “Go in peace: keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? James 2:15-16
Walking down a busy city street, two friends noticed an elderly woman, apparently homeless, stopping passersby to ask for spare change so she could buy some food. Most people just kept walking. Shaking her head, one friend said to the other, “It’s so sad that anyone has to live that way in this country. Something really needs to be done about it.”
The second woman nodded in agreement. “There’s a group at my church that helps out at a food bank. I’m sure they could use some extra hands.”
“I’m so busy at work,” the first said with a sigh, “I wouldn’t have the energy to get into something like that. “Besides, I’m only one person. What difference could I possibly make?”
The second put out a hand to stop her, then gestured back toward the homeless woman. A young man had turned from a nearby vendor’s truck, carrying what appeared to be a large sandwich and a big bag of chips. He handed them to the elderly woman with a smile. They read the words, “God bless you,” on her lips before he turned and walked away.
“It made a difference to her. Isn’t that better than doing nothing?”
