Sleep Well
What’s the last thing you think about before going to sleep?
You probably have some kind of routine. Maybe you fall asleep with the TV on or with music playing. Perhaps you sometimes fall asleep while saying your prayers – I know I have many times.
Think about these promises from God’s Word as you drift off to sleep tonight:
God does not sleep.
I lift my eyes toward the mountains. Where will my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector will not slumber. Indeed, the Protector of Israel does not slumber or sleep Psalm 121:1-4
While we are asleep, at our most vulnerable, God is awake. He is wide awake, just as He has been and will be for all eternity. We can rest knowing He is keeping watch over us, to keep us safe.
Jesus provides rest for our souls.
Jesus said: “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:28-29
There is a greater rest than sleep that we crave – it’s a deep, soul rest which then allows us to do things like sleep soundly even though we have challenges in our lives. And that kind of soul rest comes only through resting in our relationship with Jesus Christ. That kind of soul rest comes when we trust that because of Jesus, we have nothing to fear, we are secure in Him.
We are given new mercies every morning.
Great is God’s faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. Lamentations 3:23
When we wake up in the morning, we’ll have the same issues, the same concerns and the same obligations that we had the night before.
But thank God, His mercies are new again in the morning. And those mercies never run out. So while we are tempted to lie awake in anxiety or doubt how beautiful is the promise that when we wake, God’s mercies will be new and we can face the new day with hope.
Inspired by a Right from the Heart devotion
Lord God thank You for the gift of sleep, we can sleep well because You never do. Thank You for the soul rest provided by Your Son our Savior. Help us to trust in and experience Your tender mercies every day. Amen.
