Our Rock

I love you, Lord; you are my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. Psalm 18:1-2

David knew times of great victory when as a youth he killed a lion and a bear while protecting his father’s sheep. He triumphed over the giant Goliath while the Israelite army trembled in fear. David knew that it was the Lord who gave him each victory. But David also knew times of doubt and fear. One example of this was as King Saul hunted him for many years to kill him.

At times David was so overwhelmed that he felt as if “the cords of death entangled” him. He felt that his end was near. In response, David called on the only One who could help. “I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies.”

David displayed great courage based on his trust in God, his rock and deliverer. David had learned from experience that the Lord was always present for him. No enemy could separate him from the care of the Lord.

When we depend on God, as David did, we know that calling on God will help to bring the solutions we need. God provides help and resources in surprising, amazing, innumerable ways. He strengthens us through His Word, speaks wisdom through a friend, and restores our hope as see the beauty and wonder of His creation. Realizing that we can rely on God to help us with all our needs is a great comfort today just as it was for David. Call on God whenever you need His protection and help, trusting His great love for you.

Father God, teach us to lean on You for strength, guidance, and all that we need. Knowing that You love us, may our love for You continue to grow as we trust in Your faithfulness. Amen.
