My Landlord

For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. Matthew 25:14

We have so much to be grateful for today. Most of us enjoy the life we have, and we are rich in possessions. To list them all would take more than 400 words (which is the average devotion length). Hard work has brought about things like homes, property, cars, and such like. It has taken even more to bring about healthy relationships with family and friends.

But what is really ours? What belongs to us? In this world, the tendency is to accumulate stuff and we do a wonderful job of it. (Take a peek in your attic or basement if you don’t believe me.) Our thinking goes something like this: “I know I can find a use for it” or “so-and-so gave that to me so I can’t get rid of it.” After several years of these thoughts, the piles have grown to a mountainous heap that would take weeks to sort. We turn out the light and shut the door on all of it. If you are renting, you might not have space for your stuff and therefore a storage unit is needed. When that is full, you move everything to a bigger unit and so on.

Let’s take a look at all your stuff – from your house to the box of hideous ornaments Aunt Sally gave you for Christmas. Not one blessed thing truly belongs to you! Yes, you read that correctly. You are only a steward of what the Landlord has seen fit to give you.

In His mercy and grace, He has seen it proper to gift you with many things. Out of your abundance, what are you sharing with others? Maybe I should ask, what are you willing to share? How are you taking care of His blessings?

What do you really need? Perhaps communication with the Landlord might help. Releasing the grip on what you call your “stuff” just might lighten your load. A willingness to share could be all that He is seeking from you.

Open the door to your attic, basement, or garage—but first open the door to your heart.

From Our Abundance

Heavenly Father, thank You for all You have given to us. Help us to be better stewards of Your gifts. AMEN.
