What Are You Thirsty For?

Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them. John 7:37-38

I can always drink hot coffee! It does not matter how hot the weather is or the time of day. Even when some friends have questioned the sanity of someone who drinks hot coffee at noon, when the sun is blazing, and its 95 degrees as I pull up at the drive-thru window – hot coffee not only quenches my thirst, but it also makes me happy.

In this scripture verse Jesus is addressing our spiritual thirst. What are you thirsting for? Is it love, good health, financial security, a sense of peace in this crazy world – I think most of us would say yes, we want those things. There is nothing wrong with wanting those things, but there is One even more critical need we have, the need for Jesus Christ as the center and focus of our lives.

The New Testament uses water as an image of the Holy Spirit. Jesus invites us to believe in Him, to trust in Him, to be in relationship with Him, and be filled with the Holy Spirit. Everyday we are refreshed renewed, strengthened, and deeply satisfied by the “spring whose waters never fail” (Isaiah 58:11).

We know in this life there will be illness, and we will experience the loss of loved ones, and we will feel our sense of peace shaken by the sorrows of this world. But our need for Christ and our thirst for Him will be assuaged.

Lord, guide us always, satisfy our deepest need for You in a sun-scorched land. Amen.
