Keep Focused on Jesus

For I can do all things through Christ, who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13

Peter’s walking on water (by Christ’s power) is almost as dramatic as being in a boat and having Jesus come walking on the water toward you. (Matthew 14:22-33) Today we sometimes use the expression “walking on water” to describe some people’s great talents and abilities.

The disciples were terrified, but Jesus calmed them. Peter tested his faith and got wet. Typical Peter! A bold start followed by a quick fizzle! But we’ve got to admire his willingness to get out of the boat. He took the initial step and walked on water. Often, we’re totally afraid without even asking to step out of our comfort zone in response to Christ’s call.

Seeing the wind’s power, Peter lost his focus on Jesus, became afraid and began to sink. He cried out what we all need to cry, whatever frightening situation confronts us. Peter cried out, “Lord, save me!” It’s a lifesaving lesson that we all need to remember.

We’ve got to step out in faith with our eyes on Jesus, not on the fearful circumstances, or our worst imaginings. When we feel lost and overwhelmed, when we can’t stay focused on Jesus, we can cry to the Lord for help. What is it that makes us doubt that Jesus can help? Hasn’t He promised to always be with us?

Lord Jesus may our confidence in You as the Son of God help us to trust Your power, love and presence in every storm we face. Keep our hearts and minds focused on You. Amen.
