Worship Him
He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him. Psalm 40:3
The verse describes the act of showing reverence for God. To regard Him with honor, respect, and devotion. Words we can summarize in one word – Worship.
Worship comes in different forms, from liturgical to personal spiritual disciplines. Worship in all forms is key to our Christian walk for in these activities we are recognizing and acknowledging God’s engagement in our lives. His goodness, grace, and mercy impacts who we are, forming our behavior and deepening our trust in Him. He plants the seeds of love in our hearts that bear fruit in acts of kindness and compassion – acts of spreading to the world the grace and mercy that He gives to us.
The first sentence in Psalm 40:3 made me contemplate the value and importance of the worship that we experience together each week – corporate, liturgical worship. So, I ask a question, why does God want us to gather in His name, to sing songs of praise, to share petitions, and to explore the impact of His Word on our lives?
Maybe we answer that question with another question. What is the greatest gift God has ever given us? The answer is: He gave us His Son’s life and granted us a free choice to accept Him as our personal Savior. Gathering then, is an expression of our faith. It is an opportunity to remember and worship the God of creation, and to give thanks for the sacrifice of Christ that provides our salvation.
Additionally, it is an opportunity to meet other Christians with whom we share these beliefs. These are opportunities to create wonderful relationships and engage in fellowship which lifts our spirits and energizes our efforts to bring our gifts in support of our efforts to bring care and aide for those in need in our community.
The words of the Psalm make it clear that God is the architect of all – “HE put a new song in my mouth.” These words celebrate God for who He is and for what He has done. So even though life is messy and challenging those circumstances are not to be our song. Jesus is!
