Autopilot

Every good and perfect thing is from above… James 1:17 (NIV)

After years of teaching and working with kids, I have come to believe that today, many parents are fliting and flying around on autopilot. They want their children to have the best life and at the same time, their own spirit has been highjacked. Claire McGarry (Mornings with Jesus) shares points to ponder about slowing the pace, enjoying each day, and being grateful.

For the first few years after our move to New Hampshire, I could barely keep my head above water. I had three young kids running me ragged, all while trying to get our family established in the community. I joined the local MOMS Club, volunteered at our church, and hosted a constant rotation of playdates. The incessant doing left me operating on caffeine and autopilot to the point that I put the wrong address on the envelope of Mom’s birthday card last year, and my mother still lived in my childhood home!

I just wrote my mother a birthday card today. In it, I was effusive about how much I loved and appreciated her. Then, I double-and-triple-checked that I wrote the address correctly on the envelope. I wanted to be certain it got to her this year.

Every day is a special occasion. However, when we live on autopilot in the busyness of life, we can sometimes credit circumstances or other people as the source of our good. Of course, it is important to thank the giver when we receive a gift. But it’s equally important to thank the True Source of All. Living from a stance of constant thanksgiving to Jesus ensures our gratitude and always ends up at the right destination.

FAITH STEP: Write a thank-you note to Jesus for all the gifts with which He’s blessed. Leave it out and visible as a constant reminder to be grateful to Him.

I’m Forever Grateful

Gracious Father, thank You for reminding us that every day is special. Help us to take more time to enjoy life. Teach us to identify spirit hackers and to run to You first—before we are overwhelmed. AMEN.
