The Value of a Moment

For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth…. All things were created through Him and for Him. Colossians 1:16 (NKJV)

Yes, moments have value. Memories are forever etched into our minds because of a moment. There are sights, smells, sounds, music, and other ways that jar out recollections. God is good! He can erase the negative and accentuate the positive. Read what Kathleen R. Ruckman (All God’s Creatures) has to say about the value of a moment.

I remember thanking God for the beauty of the blue sky as I walked to school as a girl. With the glory of each season, I thanked God again. Nature inspires me, like the time a magnificent horse made an entrance while I walked with someone I love.

The Cascade mountains and a stunning canyon have made Eagle Crest Resort in central Oregon a favorite place to vacation when my East Coast family visits. One summer, my sister Elaine and I each grabbed an apple from our condo and began our walk around the resort. Because we live so far apart, we cherish each moment together.

We passed a corral, under a bright-blue sky, and stopped to look at a white horse grazing alone in the pasture. We stood, side by side, taking bites of our apples and chatting. Then, to our surprise, the horse trotted from quite a distance straight toward us, stopping at the fence—noble, graceful, and strong—like nature’s angel in a garment of white.

Elaine gave the rest of her apple to the horse, and he ate it and hung around. We patted his handsome face, admired his flowing mane, and heard his snort. We lingered there, enjoying the close encounter with this creature of God until he trotted away.

Recently, I drove through Eagle Crest and passed the corral where Elaine and stood years ago. I imagined the moments there: the blue sky, sweet apples, a white horse, and the love between two sisters—all created by God and merged into one in my mind. And I can revisit those moments whenever I choose—in my heart.

I thank God, who can transform a simple experience into a lasting memory—because He is the Creator and Sustainer of all.

Sometimes you never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory. Dr. Seuss

Keep Me in the Moment

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of memory. Teach us to value our family and friend moments and to hold them dear as there will never be another just like it again. AMEN.
