A Bruised Apple

Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for you are my praise. Jeremiah 17:14

When an apple is dropped, it creates a bruise. Nothing can undo the damage. We either must cut it out, eat around it, or throw the whole thing away. Think about it! Our words have the same effect on others. There is simply no way to extract our comments and stuff them back into our mouths. Thus, a bruise occurs.

What does this have to do with Christmas? Everything!

As the day of our Savior’s birth comes closer, the more stressed and hurried we become. We take on this persona of having superpowers as we zoom around with that last-minute push. Tiredness sets in, followed by exhaustion. When our defenses are down, we have been known to speak and act foolishly. (Don’t even pretend you haven’t done this!)

Hope, peace, joy, and love can easily be damaged because of our words and actions. When we become victims of our own harsh statements or actions and project them toward others, faith is easily bruised. Personally, I believe that this is the most emotionally sensitive time of year. In our minds, we have a picture of what Christmas should look like. It seldom happens. All it takes is one unkind phrase, a little gossip, a raised eyebrow, a misinterpreted comment, an unwanted gift, and hearts get injured. Grudges are formed. Tables are empty.

Praise God, we have a Savior who loves us, who patiently tries to teach us the importance of keeping our tongues and behaviors under control. None of us ever want to be labeled as a “joy stealer!”

This season, be gentle with your apples! Treat them well. Enjoy the fruit!

Heal Me

Heavenly Father, I thank You for all Your healing touches, miracles, and Your Presence within me. I confess that I bruise others with my words for I know that hurt people hurt people. Teach me to lean in closer to You when I feel bruised and broken. Let me grow stronger in You. AMEN.
