Pure Wonder
And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today” (Luke 5:26, ESV).
While showering this morning, I got the giggles. One of my favorite Bath and Body Works scents is Pure Wonder. My thoughts were all over the place! I laughed about where life has brought me today, how I got here and then I began to wonder what the future holds. Have you ever had moments like this? And all this was within a matter of seconds.
It is pure wonder that I am even alive today after some of the crazy stunts I’ve pulled in my lifetime. When I turn those thoughts outward (or deeply inward), they always run to the source of life. Only Jesus is the true Pure Wonder. For Him, I am eternally grateful.
Enjoying a first Christmas with my new husband, family (his and mine), and grandkids of all ages is a joyful thought and I look forward to it with great anticipation. However, the exhilaration of the shepherds and persistent patience of the wisemen as they sought Baby Jesus…well, the entire story is simply an authentic miracle.
If you could just slip back in time with me, we might experience something spectacular.
The dim light of the oil lamp barely let us see the young mother holding her infant. (Couldn’t she find anything cleaner in which to wrap Him?) But look at her face. She is not very old…but wait, she is smiling! The angels said that this little baby was going to be our Savior. Wow! He’ll need to grow some to fit those sandals. We are at the right place; this must be it. All I can see is a couple with their new infant…but I sense the pure love found here tonight.
Fast forward a few years. Still with me?
Seeing the caravan coming to our little town has everyone out on the streets. Who are they and what do they want? They are kings of some kind—and very rich. They are stopping at Mary and Joseph’s house. I know it’s crowded so let me tell you what I see. They have presents for Him, expensive gifts. They are kneeling and bowing to the toddler like He is their King. Could that be possible? They seem convinced that this little Boy is someone special.
While the scent of Pure Wonder is delightful, it pales in comparison to the Pure Wonder of the Christmas story and the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Father God, help us to keep the pure Wonder alive forever in our hearts. AMEN.
