Not Now, I’m Too Busy!
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14
Will we always be busy? Watching parents take their kids to sporting events, concerts, parties, drama rehearsals, playdates, etc.; it all makes me tired.
It appears we are always in a rush to get somewhere fast as we speed down the back roads and take shortcuts. Somehow, I don’t think this is what the Christmas season has been all about. I understand, you ran to Christmas Eve choir practice and then Christmas rehearsal for the kid’s school program. You needed to drop one off, and carpool to get three more home, all while baking cookies, planning Christmas dinner and wrapping the gifts. Yikes!
The challenge is, I don’t recall Jesus ever saying, “Not now, I’m too busy.”
Perhaps you’re wondering what it is. It is sharing a smile or hugging the newly widowed woman next door. It is praying for a dear friend who has just been diagnosed with cancer. It is the choice of sitting in the early-morning quiet and enjoying Him. It is seeking Him over buying gifts. The age-old response is: “I’ll do it later.” But for all procrastinators, later will probably not ever show up.
Jesus spent His time teaching, healing, doing miracles and getting to know His disciples. He made time for everyone and because of that, He changed lives.
So, what am I getting at? Amidst the Christmas rushing from store to store, waiting for the Amazon delivery, feeling stranded at a longer red light, discovering that the dress you wore last year to the Christmas party is too small this year; did you throw a bucket of cold water on Jesus?
Just for a chuckle, picture Jesus at the mall today. I doubt He would be exchanging or returning gifts. In my mind, I picture Him sitting on a bench at one end by the escalator. He would be talking quietly, and listeners would be straining their ears to hear His words. Children would naturally be drawn to Him and He would bless them. The crowd would grow and grow until….
No, my friends, “Not now, I’m too busy,” has never spoken by this King of kings and Lord of lords.
Loving Lord, thank You for coming into our world. Help us to make time and space in our lives for You and please teach us how to be less busy. AMEN.
