Our Own Worst Enemy
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 (NIV)
ME: I get so angry with myself and some of the dumb things I do. Then I really feel guilty because I say mean, hurting words to myself. Usually, it’s then that I come crawling to You, asking for forgiveness. Have You noticed?
JESUS: Yes, I know that you are very hard on yourself. Your finite mind tends to look backward, longing to undo decisions you have come to regret.
ME: I guess you’ve been watching and listening to me.
JESUS: Well, yes and I suggest that you release your mistakes to Me. You know, dear child of Mine, that you are wasting time and energy which only leads to your frustration by doing it your way.
ME: But it happens so fast! It’s like these memories seem to come out of no where and then I make even more mistakes because I am focused on my past.
JESUS: You are right! Why don’t you look to Me in trust, anticipating My infinite creativity can weave both good choices and bad into a lovely design.
ME: I don’t like making mistakes in the first place, but I certainly have more than my fair share. Why so many?
JESUS: Precious child, you will continue making mistakes. Thinking you should live an error-free life is synoptic of pride. Do you remember My words from Proverbs: When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.
ME: I never want to embarrass You—or me for that matter.
JESUS: Your failures can be a source of blessings, humbling you and giving you empathy for others…
ME: …I hadn’t really thought of it that way.
JESUS: I know, but let Me continue. Failure highlights your dependence on Me. Only I am able to bring beauty out of the morass of your mistakes.
ME: I guess that I should stop the negative words because when I do that, I am saying You made a failure. I know You didn’t, but life gets hard sometimes.
JESUS: I am aware of that. Trust Me and watch what I will do. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
ME: Can’t wait! I’ll try to be a better friend to myself and then to others.
JESUS: That’s the Spirit!
