What Matters Most
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Colossians 3:12
This is so me! I get obsessed with the dumbest stuff. I remember the things I said and did, but most often, others have long forgotten them. All you would need to do is change (Mornings with Jesus) Pat Butler Dyson’s name to mine, and it would describe me to a T. I’m still a work in progress!

My dear friend Vivien had died, and I was selecting an outfit to wear to her visitation. Viv was an impeccable dresser. Her clothes were fashionable and well-tailored, her jewelry tasteful. To honor my friend, I wanted to look sharp. I chose navy pants with navy kitten heels and a silky top in a pattern of navy, rust, and gold. A new pair of navy earrings completed my ensemble. As I got dressed, I prayed for Jesus to give me words of comfort for Viv’s children.
I stepped out of the car at the funeral home and straightened my clothes. When I looked down, I was horrified! My pants were black instead of navy. Too late to go back and change, I slunk inside.
Viv’s daughter met me at the door. Before I could offer any words of comfort, she said, “I can’t tell you how much Mom appreciated your visits, phone calls, and cards, especially after she got sick.
We hugged as I told her how much I loved her mother. Moments later, Viv’s son was by my side. He thanked me for caring about Viv’s dog and for helping her with home repairs. I signed the guest book, watched the video of Viv’s life, and left.
In the car, Jesus whispered, Really, Pat, are your clothes what mattered to Viv’s kids? I was ashamed of my shallowness. Right then, I updated my spiritual wardrobe—my outfit didn’t matter, but kindness is always in fashion.
Father God, we all need a healing touch from You to get our thoughts focused on what really matters. Bring us back to You so we can pour blessings into the lives of others. AMEN.
