Three in One

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. Psalm 34:8

Most of us have never really dug into this verse. We say it as part of communion, but I would venture a guess that we have not stopped to ponder this sentence. It is unique and Sarah Young does an excellent job of bringing this idea home to us.

Taste and see that I am good.” This command contains an invitation to experience My living Presence. It also contains a promise. The more you experience Me, the more convinced you become of My goodness. This knowledge is essential to your faith-walk. When adversities strike, the human instinct is to doubt My goodness. My ways are mysterious, even to those who know Me intimately. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8-9).

Do not try to fathom My ways. Instead, spend time enjoying Me and experiencing My goodness.

While we were created in His image, we are nothing like Him—at least not yet. His thinking is beyond comparison and comprehension. Thankfully He had someone pen His thoughts about us to help us better understand our humanness. But really, what a great idea to put a command in the form of an invitation and then attach a promise to it.  First, we must taste (figuratively speaking) the goodness of God and then we see it. Taste then see.

But that verse does not end there. The ending gives us yet another promise: Take refuge in Him and be blessed. What a powerful verse to ponder!

The next time we have Holy Communion, remember the invitation, and the promises all wrapped together in this one beautiful verse.

Taste and See

Good and Gracious Father, thank You for all Your promises that have come to pass and for those yet to come. You are a good God and worthy of praise. Please help us share Your greatness with others who desperately need You. AMEN.
