The Possum and the Tick
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him and have been called according to His purpose. Romans 8:23
Possums are funny looking creatures! They consume a balanced died but do not seem to be very intelligent. But there is one redeeming quality about them—they eat ticks. Peggy Frezon, a regular contributor with All God’s Creatures shares a true story from her life.

What is the best way to get a possum off your property? The answer? Don’t! Possums are harmless creatures. In fact, they are beneficial because they eat numerous backyard insects including ticks.
Last summer I developed a high fever, lethargy, and neurological symptoms. I couldn’t remember ever feeling so ill. The doctor took one look at the bright read bull’s-eye rash on my side and diagnosed Lyme disease. Carried by ticks.
After my recovery I visited my friend Katrina, a wildlife rehabilitator. Among the critters she was caring for were a half dozen orphaned possums. One of them looked at me with its beady little eyes and flashed its sharp pointy teeth. Homely, yes, yet I smiled as I remembered its fine work in pest control. I’d appreciate a possum in my own back yard.
I took a moment then to consider that I wouldn’t welcome a tick. However, they have an equally important role in the ecosystem. The possums I was visiting were alive, in part, because ticks were a food source. And although I would not want to contract Lyme disease again, the tick’s disease-carrying ability helps control other animal populations—an unpleasant, yet necessary part of the circle of life.
I may not always see the blessing of an unwanted bug or even a toothy possum, yet I can understand that in nature, all things work together for good. Just the way God planned it. In His hands we all benefit, and He is glorified.
Dearest Creator, You knew what You were doing when You designed every living thing, from the grandest creature to the tiniest insect—and me! Like an intricate mosaic, we all fit together perfectly. I take such comfort in knowing this. AMEN.
