When the Power Goes Out

Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. 1 Chronicles 29:11 (ESV)

Does the power ever truly go out? Just ask any Floridian and they will respond with an emphatic “YES!” In the wake of Hurricane Milton, millions are without electricity but many still have Power. How is this possible?

What started out as supposedly the ‘hurricane of the century’ rapidly lost some strength. Is it possible to believe that there were so many people praying for those in Milton’s path, that He held back some of the storm because of His love for His children?

Power is constant! Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8, ESV). If He is the same, so is His character and each attribute. We are the ones that tend to get un-plugged and short out on spiritual energy.

We can withstand more than we ever imagined when He is our power source. When the power goes out, it is because He wants our attention. Our electrical energy is zapped and we are left with a quiet world, maybe a few barking dogs and the sound of generators turning on. The world seems far away…and that is okay.

He makes us aware of His forces. The trees bend, sway and uproot. The lines are ripped from the poles and sheets of water are blown sideways. Flying debris is caught on cameras. We witness an intensity that is not man-made.

As we ponder His sovereignty, we are reminded that all of nature responds to Him, the Creator. Do we respond in the same way to our Maker? Or are we only hooked up to a generator when tough times come calling? Is He your Generator? Should the electrical power go out, there remains these spiritual phenomenon…faith and trust.

When threats of hurricanes, tornadoes, and other disasters ramp up front and center in the media, take time to talk with Him. Off load your fears and worries. I’m not sure how we could ever calculate His voltage, but He never shuts down or blows a fuse. He might show us a power surge at times, but He gets our attention, doesn’t He.

It’s best to remember: He’s got the whole world in His hands.

Lord God, we pray for everyone who has experienced loss due to Helene and Milton. Be the source of their faith, trust and power in these difficult times. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands
