The Greatest Adventure

Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness. Corinthians 3:12

I have always enjoyed a good story about a great adventure. Our life with Jesus is the true adventure that surpasses any other! I hope this devotion, by an anonymous author, will inspire you.

Adventure – comes from the Latin word adventurous meaning "about to happen". Sir Francis Drake was a great adventurer and his adventures have been chronicled in the history books as he circumnavigated the world between 1577- 1580 in the Golden Hind. When we think of following Jesus we should also expect an adventure.

What if we were to see being a disciple of Jesus as an adventure and re-discover the excitement of living life with Him? How might our lives change? Jesus is anything but comfortable, predictable, or safe but He calls us to follow Him.

Jesus' adventurous life included the skies opening up and the Holy Spirit descending upon Him at His baptism; spiritual warfare with Satan and his minions; upsetting the ruling spiritual leaders of the times while amazing others. Jesus lavished time and attention on the lowly, the sinners, and the outcast. He wasn't afraid to get dirty or to offend people with his radical and demanding message of love and His followers never knew what to expect next from feeding multitudes, healing the sick, walking on water or changing the weather. He was a nomad with no place to lay His head; and in just three short years He did so much that no library could possibly contain all that has been written and continues to be written about His life and ministry. A Classified ad for a Jesus disciple might read:
“Wanted: men or women willing to give up careers and homes to spread an important message; requires dangerous travel; no pay, no pension, no power or prestige attached to the job; must cope well with rejection; death by execution probable; message extremely worthwhile.”

Sir Francis Drake prayed:

“Disturb us, Lord, when we are too well pleased with ourselves. When our dreams have come true because we dreamed too little. When we arrive safely because we have sailed too close to the shore. Disturb us, Lord."
