For the Love of Carrots
Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad. Proverbs 12:25
Carrots is now six months old and recently had his little operation. He did not know what was about to happen—but we did. I felt anxious and sympathetic even a couple days before Michael took him. He could have no food for 12 hours prior to the procedure. He cried, ran around, tried to climb my legs, and swatted at me each time he saw me. But I continued to love him.
I watched the clock all day and waited for a phone call about his condition. Finally, I called them at 3:45PM for an update and was told he was in recovery and waking up slowly. “It went well.” That was all I needed to hear. Gabby made several loops around the house that might have been looking for him and offered occasional little cries for his bonded friend. However, the good news is that Gabby got lots of attention.
All of this made me realize how strong the love for a pet can be. There are times when we forget to include the needs of pets in our prayers. Our loving Father created them for us, so wouldn’t it make sense that He would want to care for them too? Yes, there is quite a difference between the love He has for His Son and my love for an orange, naughty cat. Nevertheless, He loves both.
We carry our worry, anxiety, and fears with us and do not share with anyone because…well, it’s just a cat. Maybe it’s just a job, a friend, a health issue, or a financial blip. We offer up our prayers to our Father, but do not seek earthly counsel. Most of us are like that! Yes, He answers but wouldn’t it be better to have a little earthly support?
None of us like to appear imperfect or needy. So, we clam up. Getting to the point of truthfully sharing takes time—sometimes years. But it can be done within our family, a small group, or a Bible study group. I’m so grateful for my Bible sisters who encourage me to share what’s going on in all areas of my life. And I’ve never, ever heard a giggle or belly laugh from them.
When situations become stressful and overwhelming, maybe I’ll give someone a call.
Gracious God, we are such needy and emotional people. Yet You continue to love us and take care of us. Help us to seek You first and not carry our burdens around. Thank You for always being available to us. AMEN.
