Play Nice

If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Romans 12:18

There are days when getting along with others is not on my radar. I would prefer to be snarky —bite someone’s head off, chew it up, spit it out, and then bury it. I’m sure none of you folks have ever wanted to do that. Right? I might think about it but…  In our world today, it is hard to know what to say and do. We easily offend others without notice when we, as well, are rubbed the wrong way! This devotion from 3-Minute Devotions to Laugh and Reflect speaks to all of us.

The tension between the church and the world has existed for centuries. Believers are instructed to share the love of Christ with others and to be careful not to get caught up in worldly things. Attempting to follow both commands simultaneously can be tricky and stress inducing.

On one hand, it can be tempting to withdraw from the secular culture as we seek to avoid any threat of sin or compromise. But if we do so, how can we influence others for the kingdom. On the other hand, we can become so eager to connect with others that we ignore important church doctrines and traditions, even watering down potentially divisive aspects of the message of salvation.

Is it possible to comply with both scriptural commands? Peter offered sound advice to believers in the first century that we should follow in the twenty-first century. “Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God” (1 Peter 2:12).

We teach our kids to “play nice” with others who look, behave, and believe differently. Can’t we do the same without sacrificing our own beliefs? After all, people are watching. Your behavior may be the first (or only) perception they have of the Gospel.

Strong

Lord Jesus, thank You for Your strength! Help us to lean on You and to hear Your voice above all others. Teach us to love like You and not get bent out of shape so easily. Let us be that beacon of light that draws others to You. AMEN.
