More Teddy than Bear

No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me,” declares the Lord. Isaiah 54:17 (NIV)

When the enemy is lurking in the bushes, the bills far outweigh the paycheck, or the doctor’s report is significantly more than heart burn, what is the next immediate step? It is so easy to think the enemy is on your property and sneaking up for battle. A snarl and growl may not be enough. Lawrence W. Wilson (All God’s Creatures) shares a message to remember.

Our 130-pound Akita, appropriately named Bear, stood nearly thirty inches high at the shoulder. Having the massive head and shoulders characteristic of the breed, he was an intimidating presence. Visitors often cowered at the sight of Bear, though he was more teddy bear than grizzly. We knew him to be harmless—a big baby in disguise.

Not everyone was frightened of Bear though. One day, I heard him barking and snarling in the backyard, uncharacteristic behavior for our gentle giant. Rushing outside I saw him run to the end of his zip line and extend his lead all the way to the end, then lunge with all his might against it. What’s out there? What could have this normally placid dog so upset?

It took a moment, but I finally spotted a mallard hen and her brood of ducklings calmly paddling back and forth in the stream bordering our property. I couldn’t help but chuckle. Bear looked at me and then back at the ducks and back to me again as if to say, Don’t you see that? Those ducks are in our yard. Do something!

I wasn’t so much laughing at Bear as laughing with him. The ducklings seemed to enjoy the joke too.  For all his bluster, the massive canine posed no threat to them whatsoever. The zip line gave him some freedom, but the steel cable easily kept his massive power in check.

I try to remember Bear, the helpless giant, when I encounter spiritual obstacles that seem formidable, even frightening. When I am tempted, seemingly beyond what I can bear, I know that no scheme of Satan is stronger than the Spirit within me. When threated by evil people with ill intent, I’m as safe as the ducklings paddling in the creek. The Lord is my defender.

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Heavenly Father, thank You for being powerful and good. I take refuge in Your protection and peace. Guide my steps today and every day. AMEN.
