Energy Dependent
Depend on the LORD and his strength, always go to him for help. 1 Chronicles 16:11 (NCV)
We are energy-dependent people! Even a little power surge can throw us into a tailspin. Back in the day when we didn’t have electricity, things must have seemed easier. Right? Not really. They had their share of troubles to deal with like going out during the storms and cutting wood for their fireplace. It’s all relative. Anyway, Cassandra Tiersma (Mornings with Jesus) brings us a good dose of reality.

I woke up this morning to a winter snowstorm power outage. The house was cold, dark, and silent except for the sound of snowplows scraping the roads outside. Judging by the discrepancy between my electric cloaks and battery-operated clocks, the power had been out for 3 hours. I bundled up in extra layers over my pajamas—wool sweater, coat, scarf, fingerless gloves, thick socks, knee-high sweater-knit slippers—grabbed the emergency flashlight and telephoned my hubby, who was already at work, to indulge in a little pity party. I had no way to heat the house, no way to cook, and no way to power up my computer.
Every time the power goes out, I’m reminded how energy dependent I am. I almost feel silly, shallow even, fretting about it. Regardless of whether the electricity is on, the power source I need to be most dependent upon is Jesus. He’s an infinitely greater source of power than that supplied by my local electric company.
Despite my temporary inconvenience as I see the face of Jesus on the cold, wintry morning, I’m praying that I’ll always remember Jesus is the true source of power. Regardless of my temporal outer circumstances. I want to be energy-dependent on Jesus.
FAITH STEP: Check the battery on your emergency flashlight to make sure it’s working and replace it, if needed. While you’re doing that, check in with Jesus to thank Him for being your true source of power.
Almighty God, we thank You for Your faithfulness. Help us to see You more and more each day and to realize You are the source of power in our lives. AMEN.
