The Beauty Erosion Reveals by Brittany Stroop

2 Corinthians 5:16-17 So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now! 17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

I’m a science geek and a Christian. As a former biology major, I understand things better when certain theological points are associated with biology. Therefore, when I reflected on my faith walk, I turned to a biology analogy; erosion. Erosion is a natural process, by which material is worn away from the earth’s surface.

Before we experience Christ for the first time, we view ourselves as a whole, a solid rock. However, throughout our faith journey it often seems like we are taking a pounding. We are no longer a solid rock, but pieces of dust scattered due to the constant pounding of the winds, waves, toxins, and even human influences. Erosion takes a seemingly beautiful, well formed structure and peels layers away until it is jagged and discolored and only a remnant of what it once was. Erosion eventually leads to something different and in most cases something better. An example of this would be the amazing creation of the Grand Canyon. Erosion created something beautiful.

In fact, the most beautiful part about becoming a Christian is the fact that Christ peels us away, layer by layer, dust particle by dust particle until we become what He wants us to be.

I hold on to the hope that God is going to take this eroded person that I have become through life’s trials and temptations, and eventually turn me into something beautiful, so I can continue to glorify Him through my life.

Lord Jesus, thank You for Your transformational presence in our lives. Help us to beautifully reflect You; Your love, grace and compassion in a hurting world. Amen.
