The Voice of the Only Shepherd
“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” (Romans 8:14, NIV)
I truly wish that I could say that I am a good listener who follows directions the first time they are given but I cannot honestly tell you that I do. Once a directive is given, I try to scrutinize it carefully and figure the benefits from all aspects. Now, if it is a life-threatening situation, I am apt to move a little faster without too much thought.
Even when the Holy Spirit speaks to me, I tend to drag my feet a little bit. Then, of course, there are those other voices that try to give guidance but I tend to ignore them (unless we have a personal relationship and even then, I am selective). It probably sounds like I just don’t want to be bossed around nor do I like being told what to do. That is far from the truth! I need direction but I want to make sure it is from the heart of my Father.
Let me share a little story to give you clarity.
There was an English teacher whose classroom faced the agricultural school that raised sheep. Every day she watched and listened to the agriculture teacher speak and call his flock. They heard him and responded appropriately.
One Saturday, while taking a walk, the English teacher found that the sheep had gotten out and were on the football field. She went on the field and used the same words as the agriculture teacher but they totally ignored her as they ate the grass. She became very frustrated and tried herding them back to the barn but they scattered apart in every direction.
Finally, she called the agriculture teacher and he strolled over from his near-by house. He said nothing to the sheep. His mere presence was enough to send them back where they belonged.
There are many voices that we could listen to today like those found on social media, political blogs, words of athletes and movie stars but to hear the right message, there is only One Voice that deserves our full attention. That Voice speaks with loving words of guidance. Can you hear Him?

Father God, it’s so easy for me to get lost in this world. Please fine tune my hearing and then give me the willingness to obey Your directives. I need Your guidance every step of the way home. AMEN.
