From Knowledge to Wisdom
Colossians 1:9b-11 we always pray that God will show you everything he wants you to do and that you may have all the wisdom and understanding that his Spirit gives. Then you will live a life that honors the Lord, and you will always please him by doing good deeds. You will come to know God even better. His glorious power will make you patient and strong enough to endure anything, and you will be truly happy.
What’s the difference between knowledge and wisdom? Knowledge is the technical information where wisdom knows how to implement that information. Many Christians today have the head knowledge, but feel spiritually stuck. They know parts of the Bible, but they just feel like they are drifting in a spiritual ocean.
What’s the solution?
I once heard a motivational speaker say, motion creates emotion. If you want a hug, give a hug.
That’s kind of what Paul is saying in verse 9. He’s praying for that knowledge to become wise by putting it into motion—doing the right thing, not just talking about it. Today’s doctrine of instant satisfaction is a primary spiritual problem. The answer is found in practicing and internalizing spiritual disciplines. That action will increase their effects in your life—they will become easier, more natural.
If you want to become unstuck, be wise. Do as King Solomon did and ask God to give you the wisdom to become a better disciple. Then, live out what you know to be true in Scripture. Take just one small step, and it will propel you to learn more and do more. The Holy Spirit and your fellow Christian friends will be an ever present help.
Don’t wait to feel ready. Start today.
You might start by reading Colossians 3:1-14, it’s a treasure trove of ideas that Paul was advising the Colossians to put into practice. Some may have special meaning to you.
Or, one example of how to use the spiritual discipline of Study of Scripture.
Or, the spiritual discipline of Service.
