The Ever-Flowing Stream
“Surely you have granted him unending blessings and made him glad with the joy of your presence.” (Psalm 21:6, NIV)
I have found a shortcut that I like to take. It is between Swamp Pike and Ridge Pike; it’s Pruss Hill Road. It wanders back through the woods with lots of scenic views and several S curves that could easily wreck a young driver. There is also a one lane bridge that must be dealt with carefully.
In the middle of a tricky turn and before the stop sign for the bridge is a spring-fed reservoir and waterfall that never seems to run dry. I have observed this great fishing hole when the cars are parked all around and even watched a young girl scream with excitement as she pulled out a good-sized, wiggly fish. There have been other times when the falling leaves and crispness of the day comprise an artist’s dream scene. Winter offers long, pointy icicles that cling to the edge of the wall.
What I have never seen is a lack of water cascading down over the rocks. The underground spring feeds this peaceful little pool regardless of the circumstances around it. The fish thrive. The animals drink. The turtles hibernate.
When our life feels out of control and situations seem overwhelming, what do we do? That list varies, I’m sure. Me? First, I tend to back off, get quiet and look at things. It’s in that silence that I am reminded of My Refuge, Rock and Savior. There are times when our instincts tell us to hide or to run. Sometimes our desire is even to fight and argue but I don’t believe those things put a smile on His Face.
The best we can do is wait on Him because it keeps us connected. Knowing Him intimately is sort of like being spring fed. It just keeps bubbling up and it feeds your soul with freshness every day. This spring flows from His throne of grace so our joy is independent of circumstances.
It does not matter what happens around us; drought, destruction, flooding, viruses, violence etc. We can walk into the eternal stream and be joyfully refreshed with His blessings.
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your eternal spring that feeds us, gives us comfort and joy. Help us to get into the water when we are reluctant. AMEN.
