I Need More!

Courage is the most important of all the virtues, because without courage, you cannot practice any other virtue consistently. Maya Angelou

Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen. Winston Churchill

ME: I need more courage!

JESUS: Why do you say that?

ME: It’s just a feeling I have. I think I need to be braver and I’m not sure how to increase my courage so I am asking You for more.

JESUS: I gladly will give it to you but first you must understand that it comes as a result of trust—especially in difficult situations. No one is courageous without experiencing seemingly impossible life situations that build trust.

ME: With so many things going on in the world right now, I think we are all going to need more courage.

JESUS: Again, why are you saying this? What is really bothering you?

ME: Oh Jesus, sometimes I feel afraid!

JESUS: So, let’s talk about it. What is causing your fear?

ME: People! People who are hateful and angry! There are so many even in my area that are mean and seem to look for any excuse to start something. I want my family and friends to be safe. I look at the babies being born now and wonder (with a shiver) what their future will look like. This is a time that should be a true celebration of new life and yet somehow, I feel dread.

JESUS: I am hearing two things right now. You are concerned about getting hurt physically, mentally and spiritually. The second is a doom and gloom foreboding that tells Me you really must trust Me more. What makes you think that one of these tiny infants won’t become the next Billy Graham? I have plans for each one, just like I have plans for you.

ME: Well, what about those people who are looking for a fight?

JESUS: My precious child, they did not wake up one morning and decide to be incensed by social position or skin color. Just as it takes time to build trust and learn to love, it also takes time to be taught how to hate. Share the love I put in your heart. Keep trying!

ME: But I am still feeling afraid.

JESUS: I know. Think back on all the times that I have brought good out of potentially dangerous and impossible situations. You got through them all and looked back and thanked Me. You will do it again! Remember the words spoken to Joshua: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

ME: I pray that I will!
