Awake
“…But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.” Luke 21:36
This year I am going to make every effort to keep my spirit from falling into that dark hole called apathetic slumber. You know the one that says, “I don’t care!” In our world today, sometimes it is just too hard to care, right? If we think about things too long, we probably have to take some kind of action and we are already too busy to put one more thing on our plates.
Our business leads us further into mental fatigue and studies have shown that we tend to crash around 9:15AM and 1:20PM. Surprisingly caffeine did not make the top three remedies. Getting up and walking around, talking to a co-worker and getting a drink of water were the top three.
Sadly, praying or singing a song of praise were not even mentioned but I know that they work wonders. Staying spiritually awake is not easy because when we get physically tired, we don’t always think of looking heavenward for some energy. We grab a caffeine drink (diet of course) and wait for it to kick in and then find our minds just a little out of sync with our tasks.
What if we try something new this year? Let’s work on staying spiritually awake. Yes, it requires some action, developing new habits, giving up some old ways and communicating with the Master. Talk to Him about anything and everything because there is nothing too trivial. He cares about every choice and decision we can ever possibly make.
Try whispering His name when you feel down and out. Give thanks. Talk to Him about your lack of energy. Ask for sweet sleep to revive you. Sing a song of praise from your heart. Tell Him how much you love Him. Be generous. Love the ones that are tough to embrace. Help when you see a need. Believe in faith.
Now, if we are able to do even a few of these things every day, we will find a new kind of energy flowing from our hearts. Be encouraged not to get caught in that stagnant slumber mode during these times. Stay spiritually awake and worship Him!
The words below are from Hillsong and quite appropriate.
There is a sound I love to hear. It’s the sound of the Savior’s robe as He walks into the room where people pray. Where we hear worship, He hears faith.
Father, help me to use my time wisely so that I do not miss You. AMEN.
