I Want to Want to Obey
I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it… Romans 7:15
ME: I really do want to obey You, but sometimes it would be a whole lot more fun to ignore You.
JESUS: (Chuckling) How well I know! You are human–not perfect!
ME: But the thing is, I want to please You but I guess I get in my way. You must think I am a spoiled brat.
JESUS: No, dear child, those have never been my thoughts. You do make some rather rebellious decisions at times and I can’t help but shake My head and say, “Here she goes again. She’s wandering off the path.”
ME: I say and do some goofy things, don’t I? My thoughts are random and I respond to them in unique ways. Then I look back and say, “I’m such a jerk!”
JESUS: Those are your words, not Mine. I love you with an everlasting love whether you are spot on or absolutely lost. I always show you the way back to Me.
ME: It’s not always easy being a Christian. I mean, really, to do the right thing means that I have to make decisions that set me apart from others. You know I don’t like being alone.
JESUS: True, but you are forgetting that I truly love you and I will never leave you. Besides, I have chosen you and set you apart to build My kingdom. That should not be a huge surprise.
ME: But what about the goofy things that I say and do along the way?
JESUS: Others see your effort and can witness My forgiveness, grace and mercy through you. Isn’t that enough?
ME: Yes, I guess it is. I have one more personal question for You.
JESUS: And what would that be, My child?
ME: Do You really shake Your head and laugh about some of the dumb stuff I do?
JESUS: Yes, but not in a way that mocks you or puts you down. I am highly amused with the antics and routes you take at times. Your thoughts may wander but your heart is genuine. You are Mine and I am yours.
ME: So, You don’t laugh at me?
JESUS: Never! Love doesn’t do that.
ME: You know I do want to want to obey You in every way.
JESUS: I am well aware of that. It’s a journey.
ME: I’m so glad we got that settled.
JESUS: (chuckling) Me too…more than you’ll ever know.
