A Little Walk
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” JOHN 8:12 (ESV)
There is something calming about walking along an old dirt road early in the morning. There, I find no rush hour traffic, no horns honking, no sirens wailing or traffic lights blinking. It is just nature and me. To be quite honest, I am very protective of my time (mostly because I have wasted so much).
Throughout the years, I have learned that walking helps improve all kinds of health issues such as: diabetes, anxiety, depression and it increases bone density. It also can help prevent cancer, Alzheimer’s and dementia. There are numerous studies with a ton of benefits for brisk, speed and long-stride walking. Me? I just stroll along, not wanting to miss anything. I watch, listen and participate in God’s creation.
I would not care if it did none of these health things! The fresh air and seeing nature at it’s finest bring great joy and exhilaration to my soul. Now, really, which would you rather see: a doe and her new fawns or more media hype about the crazy violent shootings?
These studies all indicate that 30-60 minutes a day is most beneficial for becoming healthier. I do not have that kind of time and it is likely that we are in the same boat. What time I have, I try to use it wisely.
Many of my best sauntering moments are filled with prayer. I am not sure why but more comes to mind when I am moving than if I am just sitting.
By the way, how much time is spent with Jesus every day? What if we could spend 30-60 minutes each day in His Presence with song, prayer, reading the Word or being still? Have you ever wondered what the day might look like by putting Him ahead of everything else? Before breakfast, lunch packing, checking the planner for the day’s schedule or even before anyone else gets up, claim your time! He might be waiting for you.
Gracious God, thank You for the desire You place in our hearts to be closer to You. Please help us to use our time wisely. We give You all the praise and glory! Amen.
