Destination Location

For this world is not our home. Hebrews 13:14

Cassandra Tiersma has written a deeply moving devotion for Mornings with Jesus. I am not sure what the little nature-packed adventure town of Mt. Shasta looks like after all these recent storms but really, it could be anywhere, USA. (The above pic is of Mt. Shasta, CA.)

I live in Northern California, near Mt. Shasta, a destination location. People come from near and far to visit or live here. Consequently, a number of full-time nomadic hikers, aka “travelers,” migrate in and out of the area. According to the season, some display cardboard sighs with various requests for food, gas, money, or rides. But the sign that makes me laugh every time I remember it had three simple words of exasperation: “Anywhere but Here.”

The raw honesty of that admission still cracks me up. It’s comical to me because, according to the local tourism marketing, Mt. Shasta is “Where Heaven Meets Earth.” Who’d want to leave that place?

I get it, though. Sometimes things don’t pan out the way we’d hoped. Or we hit a bump in the road. I don’t know the particulars of why that traveler was so desperate to get out of our area, but I do understand the sentiment. Sometimes people let us down. When my life doesn’t feel like heaven meets earth, it’s easy for me to wish I was anywhere but here too.

When the author of the book of Hebrews wrote that this world was not our home, he explained it was because we, as believers, are looking forward to our everlasting home in heaven. No wonder we experience wanderlust in this life here on earth. I might live in a destination location, but it’s not my final destination. My home is with Jesus.

FAITH STEP: Are you at home with Jesus? Or are you experiencing spiritual wanderlust, wishing you were “anywhere but here”? Ask Jesus for a heightened appreciation for wherever you are in life, regardless of present circumstances.

How Great Thou Art

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word that tells us this is not our home. We long to be with You. Please give us a heavenly focus as we journey on this earth. AMEN.
