Spiritual Check-Up

Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test? 2 Corinthians 13:5

Early fall each year, I make my appointments for my annual physical. I make time to get all my check-ups done. It causes some anxiety because I don’t know what the results will be. Afterward, I am relieved when all the tests and physical exams have been completed and my discussion with the doctor is over.

I receive the information needed to proceed with instructions, continue what I am doing, or praise that I have caught something early on.

Isn’t this what we need with our Lord? We ought to talk with Him and review our spiritual health. I know, it is difficult because we know not everything is where or what we want – or He wants.

We are told by physicians to do self-examinations for “early detection.” If you are like me, I hate doing that exam because I don’t really want to know.

In searching for other scriptures about self-analysis, I found the following verses in which God tells us to conduct our own soul-searching: James 1:23-25, Lamentations 3:40, 1 Corinthians 11:28-32.

Do we feed ourselves spiritual food that nourishes our soul? Maybe we open our minds to things that are not spiritually healthy; things that can be detrimental, harmful, and sometimes deadly. Our shame stops us from going straight to the Great Physician. Remember, God knows us better than anyone, even better than we know ourselves. He can heal our heart and soul, even when it’s news we don’t want to hear.

He brings us through the toughest times when we listen to His words. My plans are to try to make those appointment times not only with the earthly physicians but the most important Physician, my Creator, and hear His words and directions for a better spiritual life.

A peaceful relief awaits us when we listen to our Father; and we can move forward with a healthy spirit.

It Is Well with My Soul

Father: It pleases You when we come to you for our check-ups. You make the time for us immediately so that we don’t have to wait for weeks just to get to see You. You are always waiting for us, and You give us unlimited time to speak with You. Thank You for taking time for me.
