The Eyes of a Boy and His Dog
The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. Matthew 6:22 (NKJV)
This is a heart-warming story, and it is exactly what the title and Bible verse tell us. Truly, I could not find a single pic of both as described in this devotion, but you’ll get the idea. Sandra Clifton (All God’s Creatures) writes about her nephew, his best friend, and what she sees in their eyes.

“Look at those eyes!” my husband, Terry, exclaimed, calling me to my computer. “See?” he said as he pointed to the digital photo. My eight-year-old nephew Ron and his dog, Sir Lancelot were dressed up as the dynamic duo of Superman and Superdog.
The photo was taken from my niece’s front porch, the morning of the school’s fall costume parade. It appeared to be a crisp October morning with piles of gold, orange, and red leaves visible on the ground. The jagged-toothed-jack-o’-lanterns lined the steps.
Excitement was definitely in the air as Superman posed with his arms thrust in the air, cape rippling over his right shoulder. His dramatic posture transmitted that he was ready to rocket skyward into the galactic realms to right the wrongs of the universe. Lancelot was no slacker either. As Ron’s trusty sidekick, he gazed adoringly at his superhero partner with mouth open, tongue hanging out, and cape flying in the breeze. A sight to behold!
But as Terry mentioned, what stood out was the love in those eyes. Those two sets of sparkling eyes were in all the photos we received of Ron and Sir Lancelot. They belonged to a joyful boy and one adoring pet.
It made me stop and consider what people see coming from my eyes. If someone met or encountered me, were they greeted by eyes of love, acceptance, mercy, and kindness? Or did the eyes tell another story? I prayed the Lord would empower me to keep His light shining through my eyes—the same light I saw in pictures of an eight-year-old boy and his best buddy.
When there is love in the heart, there are rainbows in the eyes, which cover every black cloud with gorgeous hues. Henry Ward Beecher

Gracious Father, thank You for giving us the joy of being a light to others. Teach us how to shine even when we don’t feel like it! Show us how to love and help others as You do. AMEN.
