WHO HAS THE POWER?
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts1:8
The book of Acts opens with an encouraging reminder that God will give us the power through His Spirit to accomplish everything He calls us to do. The disciples received this teaching by the risen Christ prior to His ascension. This comes true on the day of Pentecost.
So how does the idea of sharing the gospel with a non-Christian make you feel? Anxious or afraid? Feeling inadequate or insufficiently prepared? Let’s not forget, we come to worship, we have our devotional times, our prayer times, and Bible Study opportunities. All of these are driven by the Holy Spirit to equip us to help others to discover their own relationship with Jesus.
We may say things like, “I just can’t do that”, or maybe, “Isn’t that the pastor’s job?” These are expressions of the lacking confidence in our own capabilities. We fear failure because we often can only measure success by our own power.
If you are one of these people, please just take a deep breath and relax. The ability to evangelize comes from God. Evangelism is not about proving anything to anyone. We are to let the Holy Spirit work in and through us.
It is so comforting to know that God never asks us to do anything He does not equip us to do. And He has equipped all Christians to share our faith. So, when I hear excuses like “I can’t do that,” I have to say, you’re right … but God can do it through you because He has gifted you. Philippians 4:13 states, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”
God Himself is the only power behind the growth of His Church and the salvation of souls. Approach evangelism with confidence in His power and that His will is always done.
So, let’s be the vessel He has formed us to be. Trust Him to do the heavy work. Share the grace and love He has given you, let it motivate you to share that love with those you meet. You’re a loved child of God … let them see it!
Lord, I ask you today to remove my fears about sharing my faith. Make me confident in Your power to bring someone to discover the wonder of building a relationship with You. In Jesus’ name I pray, AMEN.
