Morning Psalm
Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord. Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly. Psalm 5:3
I am inspired by David, who though he was certainly an imperfect man, was known as a man after God’s own heart. David made some bad decisions, but he sought to repent for his transgressions, and he also knew to turn to God and seek His guidance when dealing with his enemies.
Consider his prayer life. David’s prayer life demonstrated someone who trusted the Word of God. He prayed faithfully, each day with an expectation that God would answer his prayers.
As the verse instructs, morning by morning he lifted his thoughts to the Lord with praise always to God for his salvation. From the moment he woke from his sleep, his thoughts turned to the Lord. He knew that God would hear his petitions and he eagerly and patiently waited for answered prayer. And David rejoiced in God’s never-failing faithfulness.
So, then what can be learned from David? Well, first, that our first thoughts of the day should be on our relationship with God. Second, trust He is eagerly waiting to share this time together – to hear our needs but also to be heard. Then lastly, we wait expectantly for God to work His will into the circumstances of our days.
When we pray, God listens. He hears our prayers, and He is always listening. Another psalm ushers in similar comfort and reminds us of God’s attentiveness; “I love the Lord because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!” (Psalm 116:1-2)
Do you seek God early every morning?
Do you wait expectantly for God to intervene on your behalf throughout your day?
Let’s be like David!
Father God, thank You for Your mercies every new day. Help me to be more like David in my prayer-life and may I enter into Your presence with his expectation and faith that You are The God of answered prayers – in Your own way and in Your own time. In Jesus’ name I ask, AMEN.
