Where the Wind Blows

The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So, it is with everyone born of the Spirit. John 3:8 (NIV)

Isn’t it fascinating that no one can tell us where the wind comes from or where it will show up next? This is one of those true mysteries. We see the results of it, but not the actual wind. Sharon Hinck (Mornings with Jesus) shares a rather humorous real-life story.

Our congregation was holding an outdoor service in front of our church building. Pastoral personnel and the music team stood on a platform. The day was sunny, and my heart was full as I worshiped.

Then the wind picked up. A few sheets of music blew off the music stands. Staff scrambled to gather them and return them to the instrumentalists. Stronger gusts rattled nearby trees. One music stand tipped over. More pages scattered. My gaze followed a sheet of music as it swirled higher and higher, over the rooftop of the church.

In spite of the challenges, our service continued. Soon it was time for the Scripture reading. A volunteer opened her Bible and read the sermon theme for the day: “The wind blows wherever it pleases.”

The congregation chuckled at the appropriateness of the verses, but I also felt a tingling awareness.

Jesus told Nicodemus about the bold and unrestrained work of His Holy Spirit in John 3. Sometimes, He goes places we don’t expect. He often stirs a new calling in our hearts. He disrupts the ordinary and invites us to share in His work.

Like our windy worship service, I may sometimes have to hold on to my hat when the Holy Spirit is working in my life. But one thing’s for sure, when Jesus is near, His presence never fails to sweep me off my feet.

FAITH STEP: Step outside and watch for signs of the wind. Ask Jesus to show you ways that His Spirit is moving in your life.

Fresh Wind

Father God, thank You for giving us Your Holy Spirit. We would be lost souls without that part of You. Please give us the willingness to go where Your Spirit sends us. AMEN.
