A Good Laugh
A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. Proverbs 17:22
ME: Why is it so difficult for me to laugh at myself?
JESUS: That is a very good question. What are some of your thoughts?
ME: …I guess that maybe I don’t want to look dumb in front of others. Or…some of the silly things I say and do are beyond belief.
JESUS: Those are good responses. Do you think you want to appear perfect and have it all together? That might be something to consider.
ME: But only You are perfect. I don’t even come close.
JESUS: Then I strongly suggest that you learn to laugh at yourself more freely. Stop taking yourself or your circumstances so seriously.
ME: I know You’re right but I don’t know exactly how to make that happen.
JESUS: You are trying to monitor my responsibilities—things that are out of your control. Find freedom by accepting the boundaries of your own domain.
ME: But tell me how to do this.
JESUS: Are you even listening to Me? Understand that laughter lightens your load and lifts your heart into heavenly places. Your laughter rises to heaven and blends with angelic melodies of praise.
ME: I didn’t know that.
JESUS: Think of it this way, as parents delight in the laughter of their children, so I delight in hearing My children laugh. I rejoice when you trust Me enough to enjoy your life lightheartedly.
ME: I don’t laugh much, do I? Am I like an old brittle bone?
JESUS: No and no. You are getting better. However, you tend to miss the Joy of My Presence by carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. It does not belong there. It is Mine.
ME: Okay, I’ll try it Your way. But I have a question for You.
JESUS: What?
ME: Do You ever laugh at me…like a snort laugh?
JESUS: No, I do not make fun of you. I would not nor could I. But I do find your thought threads to be quite humorous and entertaining. Then I tend to laugh. You, My child, are very unique.
ME: You made me this way. Is it wrong to laugh at what You created?
JESUS: Now I am laughing. Just lighten up!
Heavenly Father, thank You for all of creation. Help us to enjoy what You have done. Teach us how and when to find humor in this life. AMEN.
