The Upward Trail
Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:18-19
I remember a little song we sang in Sunday school:
We're on the upward trail,
We're on the upward trail,
Singing, singing, everybody singing as we go.
We're on the upward trail,
We're on the upward trail,
Singing, singing, everybody singing as we go.
It was a pretty little song with a catchy melody. Of course, no one knew what the words meant at the tender age of eight or nine. We all followed our leader and sang along with her. What a surprise to find out that the upward trail was not all fun and games. Our teachers never mentioned that on this trail, we would find serious conflicts resulting in loneliness, separation, cruel words, and heart aches. And they certainly did not mention that we would also experience great joy, peace, security, and love as we clawed our way up the path.
Friends, I believe that we are heaven-bound! For me, the road has been an uphill climb and I think I might have even seen some of the same mountain peaks and deep valleys several times. That old saying about not appreciating the good until you’ve been through the bad is very true. Most of my valley visits were of my own doing. Silly me!
When intentionally focused, the scenery has been breathtaking, but at various times I have taken shortcuts or side trips and ended up in my own personal hell hole. I was warned but didn’t listen. His Word was available, but I didn’t read it. The Holy Spirit made every attempt to block me, but I didn’t pay attention. That scenery was frightening!
As you look at the picture above, there are stumps, tree roots, rocks, and stones but the light on the path invites us to keep going. Maybe we can encourage each other along the way. But know that we are safe if we stay on that path. And yes, it is the adventure about which we can all sing.
Gracious Father, thank You for bringing us to this path. Let us sing Your praise and glorify You as we move closer to home in heaven with You. AMEN.
