Passing It On
I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. 2 Timothy 1:5 (ESV)
For just a moment, let’s take a trip back in time and visit with Timothy, his mother, Eunice, and his grandma, Lois. Now remember, both ladies were Jewish but loved the Lord, Jesus Christ. They might have had conversations like this:
Eunice: My dear son, don’t ever forget Whose you are. Stay strong as you go out today and share the love of Jesus Christ.
Timothy: I know, mother. I am blessed to be able to share what I believe with others.
Lois: Do not be afraid for He is with you wherever you go.
Timothy: I am not afraid. What can they do to me that my Lord does not allow? I have growing concerns about what is being taught in His name. The teachings are not correct and are leading some people astray. I feel an urgency to speak the truth.
Eunice: Have I not instructed you to always speak the truth and recognize the truth in others? As a young boy, you sat at my knee while I taught you scripture. Use those verses to measure truth. Your purpose is a great one.
Lois: In my old age, I fondly remember your mother at my knee as I imparted God’s Word into her heart. She has joyfully passed it on to you and now is your time to share with others.

This was so very important that Paul included this legacy of love. It makes us wonder ‘What kind of legacy are we going to leave?’ What will people remember about us? Our kind hearts, willing hands, gentle spirits? Hopefully it will not be our harsh words, selfish acts, or negative attitudes.
Like it or not, we tend to pick up many traits and habits from our immediate family. I have had to work very hard to escape my maternal grandfather’s racist influence. My paternal grandmother’s hypochondrial complaints. However, there has been many blessings along the way. Emily, my ever-singing maternal grandma loved Jesus with her whole heart and sang hymns morning, noon, and night. I learned all the verses of each song. Mom and dad expected me to go to church and participate. It was not an option. Today, I am thankful for their teachings and persistence.
I am not a Timothy. I tend to be more of a Eunice or Lois.
Through our thoughts and deeds, we leave trace evidence behind. What will be said of you?
Father God, thank You for showing us how to live. Help us to have the desire to leave a legacy that will impact our family and friends and reach out into the world. AMEN.
